ABSTRACT
Social media has become a breeding ground for individuals to showcase an image of themselves that is not a true reflection of their lives. We see pictures of designer clothing, exotic travel, and high-end cars, projecting an image of success and wealth. However, these curated images often do not reflect reality, leading many individuals to fall into debt or overspend in order to keep up with their online persona. This creates unrealistic expectations among people that they too must engage in conspicuous consumption to achieve success and happiness. In the quest for likes and followers, authenticity has been replaced with superficiality, leading to disconnection and a sense of disorientation among individuals. As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of social media, we must remind ourselves that genuine connection and authenticity are paramount. The false allure of status and wealth is ultimately unsustainable and unfulfilling. Moreover, the rise in cases of cyberbullying, harassment, and other forms of online abuse has become a growing concern. Greater regulation of social media platforms is necessary to ensure the protection of individuals and their rights to privacy and safety. Establishing clear guidelines for platform moderation and user behaviour is a potential solution to mitigate the negative effects of social media. This could include measures to address cyberbullying and harassment, such as reporting mechanisms and penalties for perpetrators. Additionally, social media platforms could give users greater control over their personal information and data, including options to limit tracking and data collection. In conclusion, the risks associated with social media use are significant, and we must take measures to mitigate these risks. Promoting positive online communities and encouraging safe and responsible online behaviour are essential steps towards creating a healthier and more fulfilling social media environment for all users.

Despite this, it has given rise to a distressing phenomenon – the creation of a deceptive allure of status and wealth, which incentivizes unrealistic expectations and leads to disconnection among people. The root of this phenomenon can be traced to the fact that social media platforms have created an environment where individuals feel compelled to present a perfect, idealised version of themselves. This carefully curated self is often based on an unrealistic notion of success, wealth, and popularity, prompting individuals to engage in behaviour that signals their social standing and affluence, even if it is not aligned with their actual circumstances. One of the prevalent methods individuals use to signify their social status on social media is through the conspicuous display of their consumption. This refers to the act of purchasing expensive and luxurious items solely to flaunt one’s wealth and status. On social media platforms, individuals frequently post photos of themselves adorned in designer clothing, driving high-end cars, or jet-setting to exotic locales, projecting the message that they are successful, affluent, and desirable. However, it is often overlooked that these posts are highly curated and do not reflect the true reality of the individual’s life. Many people fall into debt or overspend in order to project this image of themselves online. In reality, they may not possess the same degree of wealth or success as their online persona implies. This fosters an unrealistic expectation among people that they too must engage in conspicuous consumption to achieve success and happiness. This social media phenomenon has created a false sense of reality, leading to disconnection among individuals as they struggle to live up to the unrealistic expectations perpetuated online. This currency serves as an indicator of the individual’s social status, and a higher number of followers, likes, and comments often implies that the person is more popular and desirable. However, in the quest to attain this social currency, many individuals resort to artificial means such as purchasing followers, likes, and comments. The pressure to sustain a particular image on social media can cause a rift between the individual’s online persona and their true self. People may feel compelled to persistently project a certain image of themselves, regardless of whether it aligns with their authentic selves or not. This can lead to feelings of distress, melancholy, and isolation as individuals strive to maintain the facade of perfection that they have created on social media. The fabricated allure of status and wealth that social media fosters can cause people to become detached from one another. The necessity to present a curated and impeccable self has given way to practices such as conspicuous consumption and the contrived augmentation of social currency. These practices create unrealistic expectations, leading to the accumulation of debt, overspending, and emotional distress, ultimately resulting in a sense of estrangement from others. It is therefore essential for individuals to remain aware of these issues and use social media in a way that is genuine and in alignment with their authentic selves. The pursuit of social currency should not come at the cost of one’s emotional well-being or financial stability. By embracing authenticity and genuine connection on social media, individuals can foster deeper connections with others and avoid the pitfalls of the fabricated allure of status and wealth that social media can create.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
By delving into the intricacies of the detrimental psychological impact of social media, as well as the current predicaments and potential remedies, this research aspires to offer a comprehensive outlook on the challenges endured by society due to excessive engagement with social media. It is the aspiration of this investigation to contribute to the collective endeavour for a more equitable and just society.
REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Social media has become an inseparable part of our daily lives, and undoubtedly, it has brought about remarkable advantages, including increased connectivity and access to information. However, it’s also been linked to a plethora of negative psychological effects.
Studies have shown that excessive social media use can trigger heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. For instance, a study by Kross et al. (2013) found that prolonged use of Facebook was associated with a decrease in subjective well-being. Likewise, another study by Lin et al. (2016) demonstrated that heavy social media use was linked to heightened levels of anxiety and depression among adolescents.
Furthermore, social media has been shown to fuel a phenomenon known as “social comparison,” which leads to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Fardouly et al. (2018) revealed that exposure to social media images depicting unrealistic body ideals led to increased body dissatisfaction and disordered eating behaviours among young women.
The addictive nature of social media is also a growing concern. Studies have shown that social media use can activate the same reward centres in the brain as drugs and other addictive substances (Kuss & Griffiths, 2017). This can lead to a cycle of compulsive use, with individuals feeling unable to disengage from social media despite negative consequences.
To sum up, while social media has undoubtedly revolutionised our world, research has underscored a range of negative psychological effects associated with excessive use, including heightened levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, social comparison, body dissatisfaction, and addictive behaviours. It’s vital that individuals and society as a whole take steps to address these negative effects and foster a healthier relationship with social media.

In the pursuit of perfection, individuals often feel coerced to present a curated and unblemished self to the world, leading to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. The constant comparison to others’ seemingly perfect lives can create a toxic cycle of anxiety and depression. Additionally, the fear of missing out (FOMO) on the latest news and updates can lead to a constant need for social media validation, further perpetuating negative feelings. Cyberbullying and negativity are other potential hazards of social media, creating an environment that fosters shame, embarrassment, and isolation. Finally, excessive social media use can create a disconnection from genuine human connections, a potentially damaging situation for an individual’s mental health. To ensure that social media usage remains beneficial, it is important to set limits, practice self-care, and develop meaningful relationships with others, both online and offline.

As we spend more and more time connected to our devices, we may lose sight of the importance of meaningful connections with those around us. This can contribute to a sense of loneliness and isolation, which can have negative effects on our mental health. while social media can be a powerful tool for bringing people together, it’s important to be aware of the potential downsides. By striving for a balanced approach to social media use, we can reap its benefits while avoiding its negative effects.
Self Destructive Lifestyle Practices
It is crucial for individuals to recognize these potential dangers of social media and to use it in a way that is healthy and authentic. This may involve setting boundaries around its use, such as limiting the amount of time spent on social media, practising self-care, and cultivating meaningful connections with others both online and offline. By doing so, we can ensure that social media is a positive force in our lives, rather than the ultimate tool for self-sabotage. The problem of social media creating a fake allure of status and money and leading to self-sabotage can be addressed through a variety of pragmatic solutions. Here are five potential solutions and how they can be effectively practised:
- In order to alleviate the detrimental effects of social media, it is crucial to establish clear boundaries around its use. This can be achieved by conscientiously limiting the amount of time spent on social media, disabling notifications, and scheduling specific times of day to engage with it. By doing so, individuals can diminish the pressure to be continuously connected to social media and create more opportunities for alternative activities and interactions. To effectively implement this solution, one must be purposeful and deliberate in their approach to social media. This may involve setting specific objectives for social media use, such as only checking it once in the morning and once in the evening, or designating a daily time limit for its consumption. Furthermore, individuals may consider substituting social media use with other endeavours such as reading, working out, or spending quality time with loved ones. Establishing these boundaries empowers individuals to prioritise their well-being and mental health by placing limits on social media’s influence in their lives. It allows one to redirect their focus to what truly matters, both online and offline, ultimately cultivating a more fulfilling and balanced existence.

To achieve this, individuals must actively seek out and engage with positive online communities. Practising this solution effectively requires a purposeful approach to social media use. Individuals can curate a more supportive and uplifting online experience by intentionally seeking out and following accounts and pages that promote positivity and self-care. Moreover, one can contribute to online discussions constructively and empathetically, and engage with others in a respectful and supportive manner.
- The pressure to present a perfect and curated version of oneself on social media can often lead to self-sabotage. To counteract this, it is crucial to focus on authentic self-presentation and resist the urge to create a false persona. Practising this solution effectively involves being truthful and transparent about one’s experiences and emotions on social media. This may involve sharing vulnerable or personal stories and being open and genuine in social media posts. Furthermore, it requires resisting the urge to compare oneself to others and instead, directing energy towards personal growth and development. In essence, it is important to embrace one’s true self and refrain from conforming to unrealistic expectations. By being honest and genuine in one’s social media presence, individuals can alleviate the pressure to present a perfect image and, in turn, promote a more positive and accepting online community.
